Taboo Topics in Successful Dating

Have you ever noticed on TV and in movies how any topic is okay to discuss with a significant other? That's why they call it TV. It's not real. In real-life, there are some things you just shouldn't talk about with other people, especially someone you're dating. There are lots of dos and don'ts of successful dating, especially when you first get started. But even after you've been in a successful dating relationship for awhile, there are still some things you shouldn't discuss. Probably not ever.

Taboo Topics When You're Just Starting a Relationship

Some of these are pretty obvious. The thing is, every person is different. So things that might be okay to one man or woman won't be for another. That's the trick of dating successfully. Getting to know the person you're dating and seeing what that person thinks about life, love and how they want to make it work. If you want to get that shot at successful dating, some things you simply shouldn't discuss with your significant other include:

o Politics.

Even if you agree on some things, it can lead to a heated discussion that doesn't end well. Know your opinion, be proud of it and defend it. But save discussing it with a compatible match until after you know whether or not you have a shot.

o Religion.

Unless you know you have the same beliefs, discussing religion is dangerous. When you're dating, being with someone who has similar beliefs to your own is important. But even when that's the case, it's not something you want to discuss in your dating relationship. Missionary dating, dating someone so you can convert them, almost always works out badly. Date someone you like, not someone you want to change, if you want a successful dating relationship.

Taboo Topics When You're in an Established Relationship

If you're in a successful relationship, you may think any subject is game. That's not the case. There are some things that just aren't okay to discuss. And yet, people do it. The thing is, once you have enjoyed a successful dating experience for awhile, you should know what' s okay and what isn't. And yet, some people still don't. Some avoidable subjects include:

o Eating habits. It doesn't matter if your girlfriend eats only pasta and you think that'll make her sick. Don't tell her. It doesn't matter if your boyfriend eats only chips and pizza, don't bring it up. He or she already knows about his or her poor eating habits. They don't need you to point it out. If it bothers you, suggest he or she tries something of yours and if it becomes a real problem, take the high road and end the relationship.

o Details of family problems.

Family problems are a part of life and should be discussed. If you can't share them with your significant other, who can you share them with? However, if you want to keep your successful dating relationship successful, you shouldn't share that your uncle just found out he won't be able to reproduce in detail. Don't share what happened when your sister was in labor. Discuss what you found after your brother spent the night in the spare room could be okay, if the person you're dating has a sense of humor.

o Saying you hate the other person's job.

Have you ever been with someone who is constantly down on you because of where you work? Whether you like your job or not, this is a fast track off of the successful dating highway. A person's job is important to them. It defines part of what makes them special. If you think your girlfriend's job as a wedding planner is stupid, telling her that will make her mad. And if you disrespect your boyfriend because he's a trucker, it's going to lead to problems. If you don't like his or her job, either get over it or move on. Successful dating includes being proud of what he or she does for a living.

Good Conversational Topics for Successful Dating

Of course, for every topic that shouldn't be discussed, there are dozens that can be. Successful dating requires conversation. So, if you want a good relationship, you need to be able to talk. Some examples of acceptable topics include:

o Work

o Pets

o Classes

o Friends

o Family

o Interests

o Sports

o Favorite things

o Music

o Television

Maintaining a successful dating relationship is hard work. However, by thinking before you speak, you have a chance to make yours a little more successful.
