Don't Emotionally Suffocate Your Date

Are you emotionally suffocating your dating partner or are you giving your partner the room that she or he needs to emotionally breathe in the relationship? It's possible that you do not even realize that you are emotionally suffocating your partner. That is definitely not the way to have a mature dating relationship and to grow together in a healthy way that also develops your individual personalities and characters. We all need to be involved in relationships, but we also need the chance to have that alone time where we can relax and decompress and don't always have to "be on target" and no one is watching what we are doing. Being in a mature dating relationship is all about finding that balance in every area of your lives together as a couple; one of those target areas is to give each other space.

Are you the type of person who always needs to be in control? If you are that type of personality, it's not impossible to have a mature dating relationship, but you definitely need to work at not emotionally suffocating your dating partner. How does one emotionally suffocate another person? This happens when you are always questioning your partner and asking his or her whereabouts and your partner ends up feeling like you are always interrogating him or her; this is not a conducive environment for a strong relationship. If you are constantly belittling your dating partner or are focusing on his or her negative attributes, this will cause your partner to be emotionally suffocated. This is also not conducive to creating an environment for a healthy relationship.

If your dating partner is the type of person who lacks the discipline to make decisions and is always clinging and does not give you the space that you need, then he or she is emotionally suffocating you; definitely not the way to produce a mature dating relationship. If your partner wants to maintain a mature dating relationship with you, then he or she also has some work cut out to do. Not to single out one or the other, you both need to realize that if your want to have a mature dating relationship, then you definitely need to work hard and be disciplined. Having a mature relationship is very rewarding and even though there is hard work involved in maintaining such a relationship, it is definitely worth it in the end.

It's great to spend time together and that is one of the major ways that we bond and get to know each other better and have that mature dating relationship that we are looking for. The problem comes into play when we don't allow each other to have that necessary breathing room to decompress and relax and get that down time that we need. If you want to have a mature dating relationship, you cannot focus on the negatives in the relationship, but rather, you need to keep your outlook on the future and all of the possibilities that exist between you two and that will take you on a journey towards maintaining a mature dating relationship.
